Shedunnit: The Queer Clues….

Shedunnit

My friend the writer Caroline Crampton is, like me, a fan of Golden Age detection stories. So it was very good news when she started a podcast on the subject, with particular emphasis on the women involved, and with the excellent title Shedunnit.

I strongly urge you to sign up for this excellent show. And the most recent epi is a particularly good place to start (though you will then want to go back and listen to all of them…) because I am featured in it.

The title is Queer Clues, and we are looking at the coded, secret and open ways in which LGBTQ themes featured in the crime fiction of the early and mid-20th Century – one open secret being that there was a lot of it, and in some unexpected ways. We discuss Dorothy L Sayers, Gladys Mitchell, Josephine Tey, Agatha Christie - all very familiar to readers of this blog (links to posts on them from the labels at the bottom).

Regular readers may remember that I contributed to  the book Murder in the Closet (yes, you know, it was Edgar-nominated and I went to the ceremony.) This was edited by the highly-expert Curtis Evans, and featured a large number of essays on this theme. My own was about Josephine Tey’s Miss Pym Disposes, a great blog favourite, which I discuss in the podcast. Another contributor to the book is Jamie Bernthal-Hooker,  who also features in the Shedunnit podcast.

Shedunnit is easy to find and listen to, and I strongly recommend you do so!

  1. Oh, that does sound like a great podcast, Moira. It sounds informative as well as entertaining, and that's not an easy balance. I'll have to check it out.

  2. I'll think about it. There might be a few others ahead of it in the queue

    1. I don't have a big podcast habit, but I do enjoy the ones Caroline does.
