Tipping my Fedora – Ross Macdonald

Sheer joy

My old friend Sergio Angelini has a wonderful podcast called Tipping My Fedora (following on from his  blog of that name) looking at All Things Noir.

Tipping My Fedora | Sergio Angelini

He and I go back a long way, and you can hear in the podcast how I consider we have a Venn diagram of our interests – I don’t know how much he would be reading eg Patricia Wentworth, while he goes into the dark side of noir and into horror, not always my scene. But right in the middle we have our overlapping area, which includes John Dickson Carr, and Margery Allingham – and Ross Macdonald, and his wife Margaret Millar.

So when he invited me to discuss the Macdonald novels, and the films made from them, and any related topic that popped into our heads - I was delighted.

You couldn’t shut us up: you can find the podcast here

43. The novels of Ross Macdonald, with Moira Redmond | Tipping My Fedora

… and it is long but (obviously) full of good stuff. We also discuss Sue Grafton, Ed McBain, and Agatha Christie. We look at my favourite noir film, which is Dead Reckoning (Geronimo!), ask if Paul Newman is TOO good-looking, and consider the economic basis of feminism, and Meat Loaf.

Paul Newman realizes he has no more coffee: the moment in the film Harper that screenwriter William Goldman says brought the audience onside

Listen in – it’s good fun!

And expect quite a few more posts on specific Macdonald books in the near future.
