A Cage Went in Search of a Bird: Ten Kafkaesque Stories
Anthology of short stories, introduced by Becca Rothfeld
published 2024
Franz Kafka died 100 years ago: this book is a tribute to
him, and I reviewed it in the i newspaper.
Ten authors were asked to write stories inspired by Kafka:
they include Ali Smith, Naomi Alderman and Charlie Kaufman.
I really liked the book: an interesting idea, very varied settings
and characters – you never knew what was coming next. A refreshing read, full
of ideas, and introduced me to some new writers. My opening sentences were:
There’s something terribly encouraging in this book’s very existence. We are told no one reads literary fiction, or short story collections, and that the classics are dead, and there is no money in any of it – and still someone thought we should mark 100 years since Franz Kafka’s death with an anthology of stories by 10 different authors, inspired by his work. It seems both ridiculous and brilliant.

articles you can access on the newspaper's website each month, but you may be

As always, a great review, Moira. And what an interesting way to explore Kafka's work. Those different takes on his writing must have been fascinating.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margot - it felt like a good way to learn more about Kafka and about modern life too, if that doesn't sound too pretentious!
