The Verdict of Us All: Just One More Book….

A group of crime bloggers have got together under the gentleVerdict of us all direction of Kate Jackson (cross-examining crime/ armchair reviewer) to contribute something to a round-table discussion: each of us will supply a shortish answer to a question of interest, on a regular basis. The results will be disseminated under the general title The Verdict of Us All.

Kate is hosting the first of the collections on her blog now. We're looking for the impossible - that one more book we wish a favourite author had written...

It’s a fascinating list of the authors we’d like to read more of – my choice was Dorothy L Sayers. Go over to Kate’s blog now to read everyone’s submissions, and to add your own.

And here’s a list of my blogposts on the books Sayers did write:

  1. Great list, which once again makes me want to re-read Sayers - in particular the Vane quartet and Murder Must Advertise. I'm very impressed that you have more than one post on a book. Thanks for contributing to the panel. Hoping to do another one soon after the hectic-ness which is August.

    1. Yes, enjoyed this and will look forward to another. Clothes gives me an excuse to do more than one post per book!

  2. What an intriguing question! Among crime novelists, I'd probably choose Agatha Christie. But another Edmund Crispin at his best would be good . . . or, yes, Dorothy L Sawyers if it was as good as The Nine Tailors.

    1. I'm sure you can imagine how I dithered Christine! So many authors. Christie is my favourite, but she did right a lot, we didn't get short measure. And I felt the same about Allingham. Crispin I just couldn't imagine it somehow.

  3. Ah, I misread the premise of the topic. I thought it was authors who only produced one book in their lifetime. I have to say I'm in complete and utter agreement with you and your choice of Dotty - but then I'm renowned for talking complete and utter boll.... er baloney on the 1st of the month.

    1. You wouldn't have convinced me. But come on then, who would you pick?

    2. Actually I don't have many folks on my shelves (tubs) that only wrote the one book..... I've had to look someone up - John Carbone - Last of the Good Guys (2007) and nothing since.

  4. Oh, this is an absolutely fascinating question, Moira!!! So many choices out there, too. Hmm.......much as I love the Golden Age/classic authors, as you know, I think I might go with Ariana Franklin. I wish she'd written just one more Adelia Aguilar novel...

    1. Oh yes -what a great choice Margot, I too would love one more in that series. I only started to read them after she so sadly died, and I tried to ration myself and spread them out, but I just couldn't resist reading them one after another. What a tribute to an author.

  5. The Crispin sounds very tempting, but then Sarah Caudwell produced even fewer books, and I remember how sad I was when I read the last one. THE SHORTEST WAY TO HADES is one of my favourite books, and the idea of another book that good would really win me over.

    1. Gary, I nearly chose Caudwell, but then decided I should choose a Golden Age author. But yes, would love to have another one from her. A small perfect oeuvre, but should have been bigger...

  6. I'm not sure he counts as a mystery novelist, but I wish John Berendt had written more than Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and City of Falling Angels.

    1. oh yes, good choice, haven't thought about him for ages. What an interesting writer.

  7. The only author I can think of is contemporary. I wish Kate Atkinson would write more books in teh Jackson Brodie series. Of course I would love an undiscovered Rex Stout / Nero Wolfe series book, but he wrote quite a few over several decades, so not really necessary.

    1. Yes, you end up making rules for yourself! It's a straightforward question, but I ended up thinking 'well Christie wrote a lot anyway, to ask for another would be unreasonable'. Yes, very much agree with you about Kate Atkinson and Jackson Brodie. But there's always hope!
