You might hate it - I do have to park some of my fussiness when I read them. We all have our guilty pleasures....Clothes In Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14680610242823846662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-30789227643026605432017-03-03T18:57:07.219+00:002017-03-03T18:57:07.219+00:00I have always avoided Ian Fleming for exactly the ...I have always avoided Ian Fleming for exactly the same reasons you mention. The only time I came close was when I was in Junior High School (13 or 14). A friend of my younger sister's had several of the books, but her mother had taken a black marker and censored all the sexy parts. We were obsessed with trying to decipher the words behind the black bars and didn't pay much attention to the books themselves.

You've never steered me wrong yet, so now I feel an obligation to at least read one. Sometimes I get very contrary and refuse to read something just because it's something EVERYbody must read. But, just as with a new food, I should try a bite before deciding I don't like it, yes?carrpshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16726596939143045758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-2430430423710175182017-02-26T22:41:06.886+00:002017-02-26T22:41:06.886+00:00Yes to all (as ever with your comments): he really...Yes to all (as ever with your comments): he really is a character who has taken on a life of his own. In Wilkie Collins Moonstone, there's a character who is obsessed with Robinson Crusoe, and he says that no-one remembers when they first heard of RC, he's just always been a part of their life. I think Bond is heading the same way.
AFter doing my read-through, I think many people who comment on him just haven't read the books - his attitude to women is so different from what I was expecting. And yes, exactly - he doesn't want a traditional, conventional marriage. Just like a good feminist.Clothes In Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14680610242823846662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-8693270204063041972017-02-25T23:58:28.696+00:002017-02-25T23:58:28.696+00:00All in all it's neither women or even marriage...All in all it's neither women or even marriage that Bond dislikes, but rather the sort of mimsy, tedious, lets-go-to-the-neighbour's-dinner-party type of existence that he seems to believe typifies the average '50s relationship. He's essentially after a female version of himself--determined, resourceful and damaged. The keep bringing out these continuation novels by famous authors, and they're fun but rather unsurprising. I wan't to see a book about what happens when he marries a woman who doesn't get bumped off ten minutes after the wedding! Just as an aside, I realise that some of the ladies names are rather...peculiar, but then in the 007 universe, Blofeld decides that the best way not to be noticed is to adopt the pseudonym of Guntram Shatterhand.

Bond has remained a popular character for more than 60 years now. He's outlived his literary predecessors and his contemporaries by a notable amount. We can't say whether he is going to have the staying power of a Robin Hood or a King Arthur, but he must now take his place amongst characters like Sherlock Holmes who have survived the deaths of their creators without breaking a sweat. I think that we are with him for a long time.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-48777825733347747442017-02-25T20:59:33.621+00:002017-02-25T20:59:33.621+00:00Thanks Prashant. Those titles have entered the language, which is quite an achievement. Except maybe for From Russia with Love. The book version of Tatiana is very good, but she is also done well in the movie. And I will say the same is true for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, since I did read the book long ago, and I remember the movie as being well done, although it has been a while for that one too.

As far as I have gotten (only to From Russia with Love), it seems like James falls in love with all of his Bond ladies. Another surprise for me.

Very nice post, Moira, and one I will come back to as I read more of the books.TracyKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08303342674824383688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-66520390227480291212017-02-23T12:11:07.360+00:002017-02-23T12:11:07.360+00:00Note to self......try to read a bit of Fleming 201...Note to self......try to read a bit of Fleming 2017 (ditto Deighton)col2910https://www.blogger.com/profile/06422138069939709043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-88190501460904432902017-02-22T19:07:26.216+00:002017-02-22T19:07:26.216+00:00Such an enjoyable post, Moira. As you say, they were of their time, but many of them are independent and smart. And I think the books do them more justice than the films do? Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
