And yes I agree with all you say about Jean - so annoying, you'd think Crane would have more female solidarity.Clothes In Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14680610242823846662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-26074788104844939822015-05-18T06:31:13.789+01:002015-05-18T06:31:13.789+01:00Probably won't be seeking this one out, surpri...Probably won't be seeking this one out, surprised? I can't remember the book, but in one scene she nearly leaves the apartment naked, because she forgot she wasn't wearing any clothes. Wait. I think she was wearing stockings and nothing else. (That was actually true of all the books I looked for, very strange.) I have only read one of the series and will try more, at least in part because some of them have great covers. But I will admit that I found Jean very dim in that one. I would prefer my female sleuths that are part of a couple to have more oomph and use their intelligence. But the ones I have read have been about in this time period. But the author is a woman. Oh well.TracyKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08303342674824383688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-19111052491885986052015-05-17T19:31:39.219+01:002015-05-17T19:31:39.219+01:00Good question Noah. I think sometimes it's just for background interest - like describing a building - but also sometimes we are meant to see that a woman is well-dressed, or dresses in an extrovert or introvert manner. I don't think there's any deep significance in this book, but in another of the books there is a vital detail about the accessories - showing that someone changed their clothes, or that timing is wrong: it was quite cleverly done as I recall. I still think it's a very silly book and the ending explanation of the stockings is a sell. I'm wondering, as an expert on clothing and social mores, if you garnered more than I did from descriptions like the French blue suit worn with the cherry-red sweater. I frequently feel as a male that there are tiny bits of sub-text I'm missing, to which women are acutely attuned ... the colour combination seems a bit vivid to me, but what Crane might be trying to say about her personality I have no idea. And there's a number of examples of this in the book. <br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-22340716310104894312015-05-17T14:21:25.156+01:002015-05-17T14:21:25.156+01:00I can't say I'm going to try to persuade y...I can't say I'm going to try to persuade you Margot! I'll just leave it at that. And honestly, this doesn't sound like my sort of book. Still, I do like the setting and context. And the era is fascinating too. But...nope - not going to succumb, I don't think. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
