The characters are older, and the opening isn't as harsh as the Great Depression chapters in the first one. And thankfully I haven't forgotten too many of the characters. I wouldn't say that the Cold War focus is light by any means, but it's lighter than the Great Depression. And it's interesting that she chose the farm setting to do that. I've honestly never lived on a farm, but there are a lot of them near where I grew up. And that's what farm life is: sometimes dull, sometimes frenetic with work.
