I think you are absolutely right, it is a definite mistake, and she must have let her attention wander. It is such a great idea, that a red swimsuit would mysteriously drip blood, that she used it for atmosphere without working out the details. Yet the old fisherman doesn't see them, and when Joyce a moment later (after the couple has left) goes to check, there are no bloodstains. I'm very confused by thus, and I feel like it bothers me more than it should 😅Silvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13125582783495532539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-69501120266037709812021-04-29T17:13:18.697+01:002021-04-29T17:13:18.697+01:00Joyce wasn't aware she'd seen the bloodsta...Joyce wasn't aware she'd seen the bloodstains - she only sees them in her /picture/ where her hand has automatically added them. However, in the story she shortly after goes to control the pavement and it says there are no bloodstains...? What have I missed? It is never explained. How is that possible? Have they dried in the sun and since the blood was mixed with water, they are not visible anymore? It really bothers me, so I hope someone can explain me this! 😅Silvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13125582783495532539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-40792214714605529752016-05-13T23:26:08.427+01:002016-05-13T23:26:08.427+01:00Oh right, that makes sense - I SHOULD have had th...Oh right, that makes sense - I SHOULD have had the label, but seem to have forgotten to add it because so busy listing themes such as Christmas and Tuesday Night Club! This particular one reached its zenith in EVIL UNDER THE SUN but she's refining the details here. She's fond of using that 'hiding in plain sight' idea, knowing that the reader will make certain assumptions about what is going on. The method here involves clothes, rather than some abstruse forensic fact, with the result that the readers doesn't think "I could never have guessed that!" It's just about looking at the same facts in a different way, which is one of the reasons that she is still read.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-15062362072961892552016-05-10T20:12:23.415+01:002016-05-10T20:12:23.415+01:00Excellent points Lucy. Why not at least travel farther afield so you lessen the risk of someone like Joyce spotting what's going on? It works much better in Evil Under the Sun, although wouldn't it have been much easier to "accidentally" drown Arlena while frolicking in the sea - or to just shove her quickly off a cliff?
