I had a "happy" childhood, and it was painful; I cannot imagine the emotions she went through.TracyKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08303342674824383688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-25244964461417306252014-07-19T19:37:11.825+01:002014-07-19T19:37:11.825+01:00It is rather difficult to imagine a life without r...It is rather difficult to imagine a life without rules, and in a boarding school more so rather than less. All so interesting. In this case I think a calamitous combination of circumstances left them rather uncherished.Clothes In Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14680610242823846662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-71218771518911678602014-07-19T19:25:51.410+01:002014-07-19T19:25:51.410+01:00I know - it was considered very normal in some cir...I know - it was considered very normal in some circles, but it's hard for me to understand. In this particular case the sad thing was that no-one seemed to be putting the children's welfare first. I had a good experience but teenagers need rules. Adults need rules! I expect anarchic understates the reality.Bill Selneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17268006369157307593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-72878574480386567762014-07-19T13:23:52.081+01:002014-07-19T13:23:52.081+01:00Moira - What a fascinating book! And of course since I have a background in education, we learned all about Open Schools and other types of schools similar to Summerhill. It would be really interesting to see the same school from Mikey's point of view. That said though, I felt said just reading your post about her. I think all too often, some people still don't see children's well-being as paramount. But don't get me started.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-80045070414594749332014-07-19T11:00:05.009+01:002014-07-19T11:00:05.009+01:00I do like non-fiction on occasions, but will stick...I do like non-fiction on occasions, but will stick with what I already have.<br />My mum and her sisters bordered at a convent school in Tipperary back in the 40's. Not sure if my uncles were "sent away." Not as a result of any family loss, though that happened afterwards. It was normal I think at that time for maybe middle class children. I wouldn't have been so understanding if it was me boarding and it wouldn't have been something I'd contemplate for my own children regardless of finances. col2910https://www.blogger.com/profile/06422138069939709043noreply@blogger.com
