I love Julia, she is such a wonderful heroine, for all the reasons you mention. And now there are plenty more books by Sharp for you to enjoy... Well, unread by me, but clearly an old and well-read copy in itself. I cannot quite remember how I came by it but think it must have been one of those places where people put out old books to circulate rather than just binning them. Anyway, I started reading - and could not let it go until I had finished it, which was at 2.30 this morning. And I had to get up at seven...

I loved it! There were so many wonderful things in it: the clothes, the character of Julia, but also all of the other characters, none of whom quite fitted in with any expected stereotype. And the outlook on life - Julia's outlook, which is also that of the author/text. The joy that Julia takes in things - and in men. I loved the fact that a woman character in a book from before WW2 is allowed a sex life without being made to do atonement. (Oh, and getting the exact measurements of the protagonist stated on page 1!) During my lunch hour I started googling Margery Sharpe and then had the idea that I must tell Clothes in Books about my discovery. Needless to say that was not necessary...Birgittanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6129427507761315524.post-55705072941878767762014-05-07T10:09:01.799+01:002014-05-07T10:09:01.799+01:00So glad you came to visit! It is such a pleasure to find another Margery Sharp fan: what an under-rated writer. I have a mental image of a Keystone Cops sort of policeman holding up a STOP sign and blowing a whistle, somehow connected with undergarments. It's *probably* from a Fredrick's of Hollywood catalogue of the 1950's which is at the cottage, and I'm NOT venturing out in the -17C temperatures we're having this morning to fetch it and have a look. The motif does strike me as a sort of "amusing novelty" that would have appealed to a "certain set" in the days of the flappers. Thoughtful of Julia to have realized they wouldn't go very well with the "Matron Model" hat. That HAS to be a name the author made up for the effect. Likely, an editor would have objected to putting her in a "Dumpy Dowager" frock. The garters also sound like a modest replacement for her usual choice. I don't have any garter buckles, but I've got a belt clasp of similar date which is two silver-and-paste crescents that hook together as a fastening. A smaller version would have worked perfectly on garter elastic. It's not easy to pull off a plot like this I think without the main character seeming either really unlikeable or at the very least too flighty.
